A Day Out In Kilmarnock: Independent Shopping, Coffee, Colour And A Pocketful Of Joy

Inside Pocketful of Joy on Bank Street Kilmarnock

I’m probably slightly biased because I’ve lived and worked around Kilmarnock for years, but I think our town centre deserves a bit more love.

Like lots of Scottish towns, Kilmarnock has had its ups and downs. But look beyond the empty units and the things we all like to moan about, and there are some brilliant independent businesses here, run by people who have chosen to invest in the town, open their doors every morning and create places worth visiting.

So, if you’re coming to Kilmarnock for the day, or you live nearby and haven’t had a proper wander around town for a while, here’s how I’d spend a few hours.

Start with coffee. Obviously.

There is absolutely no need to turn a day out into a military operation. My preferred version starts with coffee, possibly something nice to eat, and absolutely no rushing.

The Coffee Press is a lovely place to start before heading into the town centre. Or try Mamitas if you’re planning to make lunch part of the proceedings.

Then have a wander.

One of the best things about shopping locally is that you never quite know what you’re going to find. Independent shops aren't dictated by the same buying departments or trends, so there’s much more chance of spotting something you haven't already seen 47 times on your phone.

Have a wander around Bank Street

This is where you'll find us.

Pocketful of Joy is at 37c Bank Street, tucked into one of the older parts of Kilmarnock town centre.

I opened the shop in 2025 after more than 20 years of running my jewellery business, and Pocketful gave me the chance to create something a bit different.

Some of what you'll find here has been designed by me. Some I've made myself. Some has been produced for us by our production partners. And lots of it comes from other independent brands and makers that I've discovered and loved.

There isn't really a complicated buying strategy behind it.

If I love it, and I think it might make someone else happy, it has a good chance of making it into Pocketful.

Expect jewellery, colourful accessories, bags, scarves, cards, little treats, things that make brilliant gifts and quite a lot of things you didn't know you needed until you walked through the door.

You can have a nosey at our New In collection before you visit, but I'd always recommend coming in with an open mind. Some of my favourite purchases have started with “I absolutely don't need this…”

Don't stop at Pocketful

As much as I'd happily keep you in Pocketful all afternoon, that rather defeats the point of writing a guide to independent shopping in Kilmarnock.

There are other brilliant local businesses worth seeking out while you're here.

Flowers by Karen is worth a visit for a wee treat to brighten up your home, while Nova Boutrique is one of my favourites for picking up a new outfit or two

And if you haven't explored Kilmarnock properly for a while, walk rather than jumping straight back into the car. Bank Street and the surrounding streets have some beautiful old buildings and little details that are very easy to miss when you're charging from A to B.

Make lunch part of the plan

Shopping is hungry work. That's my excuse anyway.

For lunch, I'd head to Cafe da Vinci for amazing Pata and pizza or La Dragon if you're in the mood for Chinese food

This is the bit I think we sometimes forget when we talk about supporting local businesses.

You don't have to spend hundreds of pounds or make some grand gesture.

Have coffee in an independent café. Buy a card from a small shop. Pick up someone's birthday present while you're in town rather than ordering it online that evening. Recommend somewhere you enjoyed to a friend.

All of those little choices add up.

And yes, buy yourself something

I am very much in favour of buying lovely presents for other people.

I am equally in favour of occasionally deciding that you are the person who deserves the present.

One of the things I wanted Pocketful to be was somewhere that didn't take fashion too seriously. I don't believe you're too old for colour, too sensible for statement earrings or that everything you own has to be practical.

Sometimes a bright pair of earrings, a new scarf or a completely unnecessary but fabulous bag is reason enough.

If that sounds like your sort of shopping, have a look at our Pocketful Favourites — essentially the things we're particularly loving at the moment.

Why I still believe in town centres

I run online businesses. I understand the convenience of online shopping better than most, and I'm certainly not going to pretend I don't use it myself.

But I don't think it can completely replace the experience of going somewhere.

Seeing things properly. Trying them on. Talking to someone. Finding something you weren't looking for. Having a coffee. Bumping into somebody you know. Coming home with a little bag containing something that has cheered you up.

Those things matter.

And every independent business that chooses to stay in a town centre makes it that little bit more interesting for the next person who visits.

So if you haven't been into Kilmarnock for a while, come and have another look.

Have coffee. Wander. Visit the independents. Treat yourself to lunch.

And, of course, come and say hello to us at Pocketful.

We'll be the colourful one on Bank Street.

You can find our current opening hours and everything you need to plan your visit on our Visit Pocketful of Joy page.

See you soon. x
